Explored future services, API monetization, and programmable infrastructure in collaboration with the global wholesale arm of Tofane Group.
Challenge
iBasis wanted to launch a wholesale API store for its international telco partners, offering access to voice, numbers, and other programmable services. The goal was to modernize carrier services through APIs—but the B2B telco sales landscape proved resistant, especially during the COVID lockdown period.
Solution & Work
We supported the design and development of a carrier-grade instance of the RapidAPI (acquired by Nokia) platform tailored for telcos, integrating CPaaS functionality including Kandy (Ribbon, later AVCT) and Telestax (now Mavenir) services. The project focused on platform development, CPaaS onboarding, partner alignment, sales enablement and early go-to-market planning.
Results
Though the original platform vision proved hard to commercialize in the international telco market, the project yielded a successful pivot toward simpler voice (eg SIPPIO) and messaging services, which later led to strategic acquisitions. It was a pioneering effort with many learnings—technically successful, commercially insightful, and challenged by timing and market readiness.
